Hitting the Slopes with the Samsung NXMini

Weekend skiing escapades are on tap this winter, meaning it’s time to pack your bags, grab some friends, find the nearest mountain, and make your mark on some fresh powder. For me that came in the form of the Sierra Nevada in southern Spain. The first weekend the slopes opened meant a lot of anticipation and a big crowd, but definitely proved to be a fun time to explore the outdoors and take a spin at some snow shooting with my Samsung NX mini.

Wielding my camera in the front pocket of my ski jacket was easy enough, but with the views from the peaks it didn’t stay tucked away for too long. And while it can sometimes be challenging to get rich photos in a snow landscape, the NX mini successfully captured the clean whites and crisp blues, while offering detail between the bright streams of sunshine and the cavernous mountain shadows.

Infuse a Burst of Color with Smart Mode

It’s easy to get the pop of color you’re looking for by setting your camera to RICH TONES, which emphasizes the vibrant colors in your shot. To shoot using RICH TONES simply set your camera to SMART MODE and choose RICH TONES.

Use Your Surroundings to Get the Brightest Whites

Another tip for shooting in the snow is to play around with your white balance to ensure that you get the purest whites possible. For an outdoor scene I would suggest DAYLIGHT mode which gives you the most natural white on a sunny day.

You can also meter your own degree of white by setting your camera to CUSTOM SET. To do so, press [DISP] and take a photo of the snow. Be sure to fill the spot metering circle with the snow to set the white balance correctly. To access the white balance options on your NX mini, press [MENU] while in Shooting mode, select the camera icon, and then press WHITE BALANCE.

So whether you’re ready to rip on your snowboard or reawakening your inner child on the toboggan, don’t forget to capture the moment, because snow season will be over before you know it!
